Home » Householders » Check What You Might Need to Pay

The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is means tested. This means you may have to pay part, or sometimes all, of the cost of adapting your home.

The full test is complex, so we’ve built this calculator to give you a quick estimate of what you might need to contribute. It doesn’t cover every situation, but it works well for most people. Your local council will always make the final decision.

That’s where the Home Adaptations Advice Network comes in. This is a group of organisations across the country who can give free, practical advice about adaptations and the grant process.

Important to know

  • If you are self-employed, have foster children, receive child maintenance, or a war pension, the calculator won’t give an accurate result. Please contact your local council.
  • Many questions are about your benefits and income, so have that information ready.
  • The application must be made by the owner or tenant of the property, but the means test looks at the income of the disabled person (and their partner, if they have one).
    • Example: if a parent moves in with their grown-up child, the son or daughter applies, but the parent’s income is means tested.
  • If the disabled person is a child, or an adult already on certain means-tested benefits, the test usually does not apply.

How the means test works

There are three main parts:

  1. Applicable Amount – what the rules say you need to live on each week. This depends on age, disability, whether you are single or part of a couple, and how many children live with you.
  2. Your Income – money you receive from work, benefits, child benefit, and savings.
  3. Your Contribution – if your income is above your Applicable Amount, part of the difference is taken as your contribution. The way this is worked out also depends on whether you own or rent your home.
