One of the most common questions about Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) is: “Will I have to pay towards it?”
The answer depends on the means test. Our DFG calculator helps you estimate this. Here’s how it works.
Who is means tested?
- Adults – usually have to complete a means test.
- Children and young people under 18 – no means test.
- Exempt benefits – if you get certain means-tested benefits, you don’t have to contribute.
What the calculator looks at
The calculator is based on the same three steps councils use:
- Applicable amount – how much your household is assumed to need each week. This depends on:
- Age
- Whether you’re single or a couple
- Number of children
- Disability premiums
- A standard allowance for housing costs
- Income – your actual weekly income after tax and NI, plus savings and pensions.
- The first £6,000 of savings is ignored.
- Savings above that are treated as income.
- Excess income – the difference between your income and the applicable amount. The test assumes you could use this to pay towards a loan.
What the results mean
- If your income is below the applicable amount → you qualify for a full grant (up to the £30,000 England / £36,000 Wales limit).
- If your income is above the applicable amount → the calculator will estimate how much you may have to pay before the council contributes.
Example results
- A family with a disabled child: no means test, full grant available.
- A pensioner on Guarantee Pension Credit: exempt, no contribution required.
- A working-age homeowner with savings over £10,000: may be asked to contribute several thousand pounds before the grant is paid.
Important to remember
- The calculator gives an estimate only. Councils make the official calculation.
- Past contributions within the last 10 years may count towards new applications.
- Always check with your local council if you’re unsure.
