How the Disabled Facilities Grant Process Works

Getting help to adapt your home can feel overwhelming. But the process is clearer than you might think. Here’s how it usually works:

Find your local council

Start by entering your postcode to find the right contact.

Home assessment

Someone will visit to look at what changes could help you live more safely and independently.

Financial checks

Councils check your income and savings to see if you’ll need to contribute.

Planning the work

Your council will help you plan the adaptations and make sure they’re right for your needs.

Approval and grant award

If you qualify, you’ll get written confirmation and details of what happens next.

The work takes place

Trusted contractors carry out the adaptations. You may be offered help to manage the work too.

The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is money from your local council to help pay for changes to your home.

It’s there to help disabled people live safely and independently — whether that means getting in and out, moving around, or using essential rooms like the bathroom.

If you qualify, the grant can cover all or part of the cost, depending on your income and savings. Most councils also offer help with planning the work and finding trusted builders.
